General Information for Applicants for Posts at the School

Thank you for your interest in a post at Belle Vue Girls’ School.  This letter is to give you some information about the school and about working in Bradford.

We are a school of over 1200 students, aged 11-18, with 260 in the sixth form.  Most of our girls come from Bradford’s Asian communities living in the Manningham and Girlington areas of the city, with other students ranging from English to East European, Middle Eastern and African. The school is genuinely comprehensive with the full range of ability present. Thus we expect about seventy-five girls to go on to university most years; on the other hand about 25% of our pupils are normally on our special needs register. Our NEET figures ( Not in Education, Employment or Training) are exceptionally low. Standards are continuously improving at all key stages. In 2009, 56% of Year 11 students achieved five or more A* to C grades.  For 45%, this included English and Maths.  The value that the school adds to students’ progress is amongst the best in the country.

The school itself is in the more suburban area of Heaton on the north-western fringe of Bradford and near to open countryside. Buildings and facilities are very good indeed and well maintained. A state-of-the-art sixth form block opened in September 2009, much needed because of rising numbers.  The school is in Phase 3 of the Building Schools for the Future programme and there are plans for further new buildings to get underway shortly.

The school had very successful OFSTED visits in 2005 and in March 2009.  Most recent inspection judgements state the following:

  • this is an outstanding school
  • behaviour is exemplary … students are inquisitive and polite
  • excellent support and high expectations enable students to achieve outstandingly well
  • strong teamwork on the part of leaders and managers at all levels
  • students approach lessons with a real will to learn
  • the curriculum is outstandingly successful
  • a successful sixth form, raising students' aspirations, life chances and confidence to succeed
  • outstanding capacity for further improvement

The school is well staffed and we attract high quality people to come and work here.  Continuous professional development is important for us and the school obtained Investor in People status in 2002, re-awarded in 2004 and 2007.

The school has been a specialist language college since 2003 and in 2008 achieved a second specialism in Science and Maths, as a result of consistently high performance. Our international work is an exciting and growing dimension of what we do.
